I copied/interpreted differently this tree that my friend drew in her planner. She had something like this, but I thought this version is more poetic, but not as nicely drawn as hers. I see this tree as sort of a Ying-Yang type of thing. We can't have love without hate and we can't have hate without love. The are represented as parts of the same tree because they both are strong feeling for a particular person. The bleeding heart symbolizes that loves feeds into hate and hate feeds into love. You can only experience true love when you have experienced true hate because only then do you have something to compare it to to feel the feeling as a whole. I also think that they come hand inhand with one another so that when you hit a low, you know there will be another high. And if you are coming from a high, eventually you will come down at least a little.
A CPB for You and Me
Q: What made you choose this particular type of commonplace book? Why not a blog or something else?
A: Well I thought that an actual book would be easier then a blog because I could write in it whenever I wanted and didn’t have to worry about waiting until I got home incase I had too much homework. I also picked a book because in case I was behind a little, Mr. Schauble wouldn’t know right away. I like design of the book I chose because it’s fun and girly. I bought it a while ago and thought that now would be the perfect opportunity to use it.
Q: What are your essential questions?
A: My questions are, ‘What should I do with my life?’, ‘Why do people try so hard to be like everybody else?’, and ‘Is peace just the absence of conflict?’
Q: Why did you choose them?
A: I chose the first one because I think that it is a very important topic to think about especially at my age when I have to start thinking about college. I think that it’s on everyone’s mind at some point in time and it should be thought about carefully. My second and third ones are questions that I thought of when we were supposed be thinking of questions, and I’m not so sure that they are really important to me now. Then, I watched a couple of movies and that made me think of those questions.
Q: Which question do you think that you write the most about?
A: I think that the question that I address the most would have to be the one about what I should do with my life. Things are always coming up that makes me think about that.
Q: Where do you find inspiration for your topics that you write about?
A: If we do something interesting in class, then I write about that. Or if something comes up in shows or movies that I think are good topics then I write about those. If I am really stuck, then I look in the planner for a quote and I write about those and what I think about them.
Q: What did you write about for you first entry?
A: The first thing that I wrote about was this show that I watched. It was about this girl that is hit by a car after pushing her husband out of the way. She doesn’t know that the guy was aiming for her husband because he owes him money. The girl feels sorry for the man, not knowing this, and says that it wasn’t his fault. When she finds this out, she feels betrayed by her husband. She wonders, ‘Why is it so easy for forgive a stranger than to forgive someone that you love?’ I tried to answer that question.
Q: Which essential question do you think this entry is attributed to?
A: Honestly I don’t think it is related to any of my questions, but I thought it was interesting to write about.
Q: Do you like having/writing in a commonplace book?
A: I think that sometimes it’s a little hard to keep up with, but I think that it’s a good idea. It’s interesting to write out ideas and thoughts that have to do with questions that should be important in your everyday life.
Q: Do you write about anything that might relate to your semester project later on in the year?
A: Probably not because I’m not sure what I’m going to do for my semester project. It might turn out that way, but I don’t think so.
Q: Do you think that you will continue writing in the commonplace book after the school year has ended?
A: I would like to if I had enough time. I think that it would be a good idea to keep my ideas in one area about certain topics that are important to me. Maybe I could even convert it into a diary or something.
